Acqua di Gio is refillable, but not in the way most people assume. Armani's system works like this: the 30ml, 50ml and 100ml bottles unscrew, and you top them up from a 150ml refill bottle sold separately. It is a genuine refill and it is cheaper per ml than buying bottles. What it is not is a way to carry your fragrance. The refill bottle is bigger than the one you already own. Here is how the Armani system actually works, and what to do if the problem you are solving is travel rather than economy.

How Armani's refill system works
Armani states it plainly on the Profondo product page: the fragrance is refillable in all formats, and each bottle, whether 30ml, 50ml or 100ml, is designed to be unscrewed and refilled at home from a 150ml refill bottle.
This is one of the better refill systems in mainstream fragrance. The bottle is built to last, the refill uses less packaging, and buying 150ml at a time works out better per ml than replacing bottles. If you wear Acqua di Gio daily, it is worth using.
What the refill system does not solve
Read what the refill actually is. A 150ml bottle. That is larger than the 100ml you already own, and half again the size of the biggest bottle in the range.
It solves the economics of buying fragrance. It does nothing for the problem of getting your fragrance into a pocket, a carry-on liquids bag, a gym bag or a jacket. For that you still need a small container, and Armani's refill system does not provide one.
Worth being clear, because the word refillable is doing a lot of work across the industry right now: a house calling its fragrance refillable usually means you can top the big bottle back up. It rarely means you can fill something small enough to carry.
Your travel options compared
| Option | Solves travel? | Ongoing cost |
|---|---|---|
| Armani 150ml refill | No, it is larger than your bottle | A refill bottle each time |
| A 30ml bottle as a second | Partly, still glass and still bulky | Full price, twice |
| Travel set with mini | Yes, until the mini runs out | Another set each time |
| Third-party decant | Yes | Several dollars per ml, repeatedly |
| Refillable atomiser | Yes | $35 once, then nothing |
Aluminium body, CNC copper bottom-fill valve, sealed click closure. 50 to 75 sprays per fill, and it goes in a pocket.
Will an atomiser fit your Acqua di Gio bottle?
Check your bottle before you buy, because Acqua di Gio spans two designs.
Standard bottles use the conventional crimped pump-spray fitting found across most designer fragrance. Pull the nozzle straight off, and the exposed stem is exactly what a bottom-fill atomiser seats onto. These fill in about ten seconds.
The refillable Profondo bottles are built to unscrew for Armani's own refill system, so the collar comes away rather than the nozzle pulling off. If yours is one of these, take the top off first and look at what is underneath before assuming a bottom-fill will seat on it.
We would rather tell you to check than sell you something that does not fit your bottle. If you are unsure, the general guide is here: Does a Perfume Atomiser Work With Any Fragrance?
Which size to carry
A 5ml fill gives roughly 50 to 75 sprays, about three to five weeks of regular wear. Acqua di Gio is a fresh aquatic that most people apply generously, so if you are a three-spray wearer, look at 10ml instead.
Double the capacity, same sealed mechanism. Around two months of daily wear from one fill.
Frequently asked questions
Is Acqua di Gio refillable?
Yes. Armani states that the 30ml, 50ml and 100ml bottles unscrew and refill at home from a 150ml refill bottle, sold separately.
Does the Armani refill work as a travel size?
No. The refill bottle is 150ml, larger than the bottle it fills and well over the 100ml carry-on limit.
Can you take Acqua di Gio on a plane?
Yes, in a container of 100ml or less inside your clear liquids bag. The 150ml refill bottle cannot go in carry-on.
How many sprays are in 5ml of Acqua di Gio?
Roughly 50 to 75, based on 10 to 15 sprays per ml. Fewer wears than that if you apply three or four sprays at a time.
Will an atomiser change how it smells?
Not meaningfully in a sealed metal atomiser. Avoid plastic, which can pick up scent over time.
Refill it. Don't rebuy it.
