One spray of a mainstream designer fragrance costs somewhere between 10 and 14 cents. One spray of a niche parfum can cost a dollar. Almost nobody knows their own number, which is why people simultaneously over-apply a scent they think is precious and leave an expensive bottle sitting at home unused. The maths takes ten seconds and it changes how you wear fragrance. Here is how to work it out, what the numbers actually come to, and what to do with the answer.
Skip the arithmetic: use the cost per ml calculator and enter your own bottle.

The maths, in one line
A standard atomiser on a fragrance bottle delivers roughly 0.07 to 0.10ml per press. That works out at about 10 to 15 sprays per millilitre.
So:
Cost per spray = (bottle price divided by bottle size in ml) divided by 12.
Twelve is a fair working average. Use 10 if your bottle has a generous atomiser, 15 if it delivers a fine mist.
What real bottles come to
Using prices published by the brands at the time of writing.
| Bottle | Per ml | Per spray | A 3-spray day |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dior Sauvage EDT, 100ml at $142 | $1.42 | about $0.12 | about $0.36 |
| Sauvage Elixir, 60ml at $199 | $3.32 | about $0.28 | about $0.83 |
| Parfums de Marly Layton, 75ml at $290 | $3.87 | about $0.32 | about $0.97 |
| Creed Aventus, 30ml at $270 | $9.00 | about $0.75 | about $2.25 |
Two things jump out.
The first is how cheap the everyday case is. Wearing Sauvage daily costs you around ten dollars a month. Most people carry a vague sense that they are being extravagant, and they are not.
The second is the spread. Aventus costs roughly six times per spray what Sauvage does. If you own both, the same three-spray habit is a different expense depending on which bottle you reach for, and almost nobody adjusts for that.
Why this number is worth knowing
It stops the saving. The most common expensive mistake in fragrance is not overuse, it is a bottle kept for special occasions until its top notes have degraded. At 75 cents a spray, wearing Aventus on an ordinary Tuesday is not reckless. Losing half a bottle to evaporation over three years is.
It tells you what is actually in your pocket. A 5ml fill of Sauvage holds about $7 of liquid. A 5ml fill of Aventus holds about $45. Same container, wildly different stakes, and it should change how carefully you choose that container.
It makes the travel-size question obvious. Once you know your per-ml figure, any pre-filled travel format can be compared against it directly rather than judged on whether it feels expensive.
What a travel spray does to it
Take Tom Ford. The 10ml travel sprays in the Atomizer and Travel Spray range run from $55.00 to $90.00 USD. At $75 for 10ml that is $7.50 per ml, or roughly 63 cents a spray.
Now compare that with the same fragrance bought in a full bottle and carried in a refillable container. The liquid is identical. The only difference is who bottled it and how many times you buy the packaging.
That is the entire case for a refillable atomiser, expressed as a number rather than a claim. Run yours: cost per ml calculator.
Aluminium body, CNC copper bottom-fill valve, sealed click closure. 50 to 75 sprays per fill, from the bottle you already own.
Frequently asked questions
How many sprays are in a bottle of perfume?
Roughly 10 to 15 per millilitre, so about 1,000 to 1,500 in a 100ml bottle and 300 to 450 in a 30ml.
How much does one spray of cologne cost?
Divide the price by the size in millilitres, then divide by 12. Mainstream designer fragrance lands around 10 to 14 cents a spray. Niche parfum can reach a dollar.
How much perfume should I use per day?
Two to four sprays on pulse points for most fragrances, fewer for a concentrated parfum. Cost is rarely the limiting factor. Other people's noses are.
How long should a 100ml bottle last?
At three sprays a day, well over a year. Most people replace bottles long before they finish them, which is why storage matters.
Is expensive perfume worth it per spray?
That is a personal judgement, but the per-spray number usually makes it look more reasonable than the shelf price does. The waste is in bottles that go unworn, not in bottles that get used.
Wear it. Don't save it.
