The right answer depends entirely on one question: do you already own the bottle? If you do not, buy a decant or a mini, because you are still deciding and an empty container is no use to you. The four formats

The brand mini. A small sealed bottle of the fragrance, sold by the house. Typically 5ml to 10ml. Genuine, beautifully packaged, and priced at two to three times the per-ml rate of the full bottle. When it is gone, you buy another.

The third-party decant. An independent seller buys full bottles, transfers the fragrance into their own sprayers and sells those. Usually cheaper than a brand mini and available in far more fragrances. The trade is that you cannot verify the handling, and reputable sellers state plainly that they are unaffiliated with the brand.

The brand travel case. A metal case that takes the house's own sealed refill vials. Chanel, Maison Francis Kurkdjian and Parfums de Marly all work this way. Excellent objects, and closed systems: the case cannot draw from the full-size bottle you own at home.

The refillable atomiser. An empty metal container with a one-way valve that fills directly from the standard pump on your own bottle. Bought once, refilled indefinitely, and it does not care whose fragrance goes in it.

The one-question decision

You do not own the bottle. Buy a decant, or a brand mini if you want the packaging and the certainty. You are still deciding whether you like the fragrance enough to commit, and an empty atomiser solves nothing until there is something to put in it. This is the honest, legitimate use for the decant market and it is why it exists.

You own the bottle. Buy a refillable atomiser. You have already paid for that fragrance once. A mini, a decant or a brand refill vial all ask you to pay for the same liquid a second time, purely for the privilege of carrying it in a smaller container. The container costs $35 once; the liquid is already yours.

Nearly every buying question in this category collapses into that one distinction, and most people get confused because the marketing does not draw it.

Two cases where the obvious answer is wrong

You want the object, not the solution. If part of what you are buying is a Chanel case in your pocket or a Parfums de Marly vial on the desk, that is a legitimate reason and the cost per ml is beside the point.
